Lost crypto, been scammed, or locked out?
Start with what you can do right now. Then read how legitimate recovery works before you pay anyone, because the people who contact you first are usually the second scam.
- Stop sending moneyIncluding "release fees", "tax" or "unlock" payments. No legitimate platform asks for these.
- Secure what's leftMove remaining funds from any wallet whose device or seed phrase may be exposed.
- Write it all downWallet addresses, transaction IDs, dates, screenshots, every message.
- Report itReportCyber (cyber.gov.au), Scamwatch, your bank, and the exchange you used.
Four signs a "recovery service" is the second scam
- They contacted you first, after your loss became public.
- They guarantee recovery, or quote a percentage recovered before looking at anything.
- They ask for an upfront fee in crypto, or for your seed phrase "to trace the funds".
- There's no Australian entity, no ABN, no named person and no physical address.
Investment scams, romance scams, fake platforms
What can realistically be traced, what can't, and what a legal recovery process involves.
Wallet drained or account taken over
Treat it as a compromised device, not a bad day for one wallet. Browser extensions are the most common way in.
Lost seed phrase, dead device, collapsed exchange
What's recoverable depends entirely on what you still have. Check before you pay for help.
